Robert L. Kline, who served as Funkstown’s mayor for 28 years died Tuesday morning. Mayor Kline was 82 and was the winner of a write in campaign for mayor in 1982 and served as mayor until 2010. He was married to his wife Reatha for 62 years and had 3 children. It was largely due to his efforts the Funkstown park doubled in size and the new section off of Beaver Creak Road bares his name for all of the love and commitment that he had for the town and its residents. He will be sadly missed. Click here for the Herald Mail story.

Kaleb Morris, James Becker. Jacob Pence, and Jared Harriman all received their Arrow of Light Sunday the 26 of February. This is the highest award that Cub Scouts offers. These 4 boys, as well as Second Class Scout Will Hildebrand, will be the 5 young men that undertake the challenge of a life time in starting a new Boy Scout Troop in Funkstown. This adventure will teach them many leadership skills, strengthen their civic support and mold them in to model citizens all while having fun with many outdoor activities.
The last long running troop in Funkstown was Troop 123 which ran from the early 1960′s until 1985. A Troop resurfaced for about a year or two around 2005 but was soon abandon. Troop 123 had many Eagle Scouts over its years which is the highest rank that the Boy Scouts offers. Did you know that the Navy SEAL’s and many other elite military groups pick the Eagle Scout’s first because of the leadership and survival skills that they learn in Scouts?
With over 48 boys in the Cub Pack there should be plenty of future Scouts to feed the troop. With the skills that these boys have learned in Cub Scouts it will give them a huge boost for the success of this new Scout Troop 23. If you are at least 11 years old, or have completed the 5th grade and would like to join Boy Scouts stop by the town hall at 6:30 pm, Wednesday night the 7th of March. It will be a good chance to see history in the making.
